Understanding HDPE Pipe Pressure Ratings: SDR and PN Classifications Explained

High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) has revolutionized modern fluid conveyance across municipal potable water systems, rural tube well delivery networks, and industrial effluent transport. However, selecting the appropriate pipe specification requires a solid understanding of SDR and PN ratings.

What is PN Rating?

PN stands for Pressure Nominal and indicates the maximum continuous internal water pressure (in bar or kg/cm²) that the pipe is designed to withstand safely at 20°C throughout its 50-year design life. For example, a PN 10 pipe is rated for 10 bar working pressure.

What is SDR (Standard Dimension Ratio)?

The SDR is the ratio of the pipe’s outer diameter to its nominal wall thickness. Because pipe wall thickness increases relative to diameter for higher pressure ratings, a lower SDR value represents a thicker, higher-pressure pipe:

  • SDR 17 (PN 6): Ideal for low-pressure gravity mains and agricultural distribution.
  • SDR 11 (PN 10 / PN 16): Essential for high-pressure submersible pump discharge and town water supply.
